Artificial Intelligence & Information Analysis

AIIA.CVML R&D group (AIIA Lab, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) is very active research lab working for more than 3 decades in AI, intelligent digital media, imaging and related areas. In particular, its topics of interest span the areas of computer vision, machine learning, autonomous systems, intelligent digital media, image/video processing, human-centred computing, affective computing, 3D imaging and biomedical imaging, virtual reality in medicine/dentistry, multimedia security/protection, biometrics, bioinformatics, computer graphics and visualization and cultural heritage conservation. It has undertaken more than 71 R&D projects in those areas, mostly funded by European Union (H2020, FP7/6/5). Prof. I. Pitas Pitas is/was principal investigator/researcher in 43 competitive R&D projects, mostly funded by the European Union.

H2020 project list follows:

  • Horizon Europe TEMA project “Trusted extremely precise mapping and prediction for emergency management’.
  • Horizon Europe AI4EUROPE project ‘An a.i. on-demand platform to support research excellence in Europe’.
  • Horizon Europe SIMAR project ‘Safe inspection and maintenance supporting workers with modular robots, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality’.
  • H2020 AI4Media project ‘A European Excellence Centre for Media, Society and Democracy’.
  • H2020 Aerial Core project: ‘AERIAL COgnitive integrated multi-task Robotic system with Extended operation range and safety’.
  • H2020 Multidrone project: ‘Multiple drone platform for media production’.

As a result of this research, 11 books, 45 book chapters and more than 920 publications have been published in international scientific journals and conference proceedings, creating 32200+ citations. Such books are ‘Digital video processing and analysis’ (China Machine Press, 2017), ‘Graph-based social media analysis’ (CRC Press, 2015), ‘Digital Video and Television’ (Createspace/Amazon 2013), “Digital Television and digital video processing(in Greek 2010), ‘3D image processing algorithms’ (Wiley 2000), ‘Digital image processing algorithms and applications’ (Wiley 2000), ‘Nonlinear Model-Based Image/Video Processing and Analysis’ (Wiley 2000), ‘Digital image processing’ (in Greek, 1999), “Parallel Algorithms and Architectures for Digital Image Processing,  Computer Vision and Neural Networks” (Wiley,  1993), “Digital Image Processing Algorithms” (Prentice Hall, 1993), “Nonlinear  Digital  Filters: Principles and Applications” (Kluwer, 1990).

AIIA Lab organizes the 2021 AI Mellontology worshop in Thessaloniki on 25/8/2021. Prof. I. Pitas was co-organizer of the WACV2021 Autonomous Vehicle Vision 2021 (AVVision’21) workshop and the 3rd ACCV Workshop on e-Heritage. He was technical co-chair of the 2003 Greek Informatics Conference (EPY) and the 2007 IEEE Workshop on Machine Learning for Signal Processing (MLSP2007) and co-chair of the 2013 IEEE IVMSP workshop on ‘3D image/video technologies and applications. AIIA Lab has organized and hosted IEEE NSIP1995, IEEE ICIP2001 (the biggest yearly international scientific conference on image processing) and has co-organized the 2003 International workshop on Interactive multimedia Content Production. Prof. I. Pitas was technical chair EUSIPCO98, co-chair of the 2003 International Workshop on Rich Media Content Production. Since 2018, AIIA Lab organizes seasonal schools and short courses twice a year on Computer Vision and Machine Learning.

AIIA Lab has strong cooperation with other Universities, research centres and industrial partners in the area of its interests through projects mainly funded by the European community.
